CSULB’s Employee & Employee Applicant Accommodation Procedure
California State University Long Beach (CSULB) is committed to providing a diverse and supportive work environment for all employees and employee applicants. In accordance with California State University’s Executive Order 1111, CSULB’s policy and procedure is to ensure individuals with disabilities have equal access and opportunity to participate in CSULB programs, activities and services. CSULB provides access, support and reasonable accommodations to individuals with disabilities in compliance with the California Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA), Government Code Section 12920 et seq., as amended, (ADA) 42 U.S.C. 12101 et seq., the Unruh Civil Rights Act, Civil Code 51, et. seq., the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, and Sections 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, 29 U.S.C. Section 701 et seq.
In accordance with ADA and FEHA, CSULB shall provide reasonable accommodations to employees and applicants with disabilities, unless doing so would impose an undue hardship on the University’s operations. Furthermore, it is CSULB’s policy to not discriminate against qualified individuals with disabilities regarding application procedures, hiring, advancement, discharge, compensation, training or other terms, conditions and privileges of employment.

- Equity & Diversity may be directly contacted by the applicant. It is incumbent on employment applicants to provide adequate advance notice of requested disability accommodations to allow the University sufficient time to process the accommodation request during the recruitment process.
- Equity & Diversity will contact applicants requesting disability accommodations to begin the interactive process. If necessary, applicants may be requested to provide additional disability-related documentation in support of the accommodation request.
- Equity & Diversity will communicate approved reasonable accommodations to appropriate administrative office(s) and the applicant.
- Equity & Diversity may be directly contacted by a CSULB employee. It is incumbent on the employee to provide adequate advance notice of requested disability accommodations to allow the University sufficient time to process the accommodation request.
- Equity & Diversity will contact the employee requesting disability accommodations to begin the interactive process. For workplace accommodations, the duration, frequency, and severity of the functional limitation may need to be confirmed by a medical provider to ensure the accommodation is addressed appropriately based on the employee’s functional limitations. Employees who are in a collective bargaining unit may bring an Advisor2 to attend the interactive process meeting.
- During the interactive process meeting, the employee and Equity & Diversity will review the requested accommodation(s), as well as the employee’s job description, work hours, essential job duties, standard work equipment, work environment, and functional limitations. Employees requesting reasonable accommodations need to be deemed as qualified individuals who can complete the essential job functions. When appropriate, Equity & Diversity may work with Worker’s Compensation, or the appropriate FMLA administrator in Staff Human Resources or Faculty Affairs, to review and address the request.
- Once a reasonable accommodation is identified and approved by the University, Equity & Diversity will notify the employee in writing. When appropriate, renewal of the accommodation request as well as updated documentation may be requested. The renewal of the accommodation request may vary based on the frequency, duration, and severity of the functional limitation(s) in relation to the employee’s essential job functions and may undergo an additional review through the interactive process. The ADA file is maintained in Equity & Diversity. The employee or Equity & Diversity may follow up to adjust the accommodation, as appropriate, based on the employee’s essential job functions and any changes to the severity, frequency, or duration to their functional limitations.
