Security & Software Updates

At Work

Security and software updates are automatically uploaded to computer workstations within the Student Services Division. Critical updates can occur daily. For this reason it is encouraged that workstations be shut down nightly when leaving the office.

At Home

Update operating system (i.e. Windows)

Keep it updated! Not only your operating software but your productivity software such as Microsoft Office.

These patches fix security holes and other issues that could make it easier for a hacker to enter your system.

Browse to http://update.microsoft.com/ on your windows computer to begin updating.

Update Anti-Virus Software

Depending on the software that you (should) have installed on your computer, the updating process could be different. Most software that is available today has automated features that keep you up to date with virus definitions. However, these automated features do not normally update the software itself possibly leaving security holes. To fully update your anti-virus software you will have to open the application and initiate the update feature. This should be easily accesible depending the software you're using, but you might have to search around for a minute.
