Leadership Academy

The Leadership Academy is a series of workshops focused on cultivating leadership excellence by developing student leadership potential for practical and professional application.

The Leadership Academy is a three-part extracurricular, certificate-bearing program composed of workshops, community service and practical application.

The total program time of the CSULB Leadership Academy is 25 hours. Each participant is given two years to complete the program. Many students have completed it in one semester. There are seven mandatory two-hour workshops and five one-hour elective workshops. There is no minimum GPA or previous leadership experience required to join the program. The Leadership Academy is open to ALL CSULB STUDENTS!

Mandatory Workshops

Leadership Academy participants must complete seven mandatory workshops. Each of these workshops are two hours long. The required workshops use the "Seven Cs" Social Change Leadership Model as their basis of construction.

Elective Workshops

Leadership Academy participants must complete five elective workshops. Each of these workshops are one hour long; while on occasion a two hour elective workshop will also be offered. The subjects of these workshops are all designed to be beneficial to all leaders and the development of leadership skills.

Community Service

Leadership Academy participants must complete a three hour community service project. The Lois J. Swanson Leadership Resource Center offers community service opportunities throughout the year, but students may choose other projects not associated with the center. Participants do not have to complete the 3 hours all in one project; they may break up their time into segments. (Some examples of community service include: fundraising marathons, church work, make a difference day, feeding the homeless, working with kids, etc.)

Theory to Practice

The Theory to Practice is an opportunity for you to showcase the skills you’ve learned by applying them. We set up an individual meeting with you to discuss your options for either one-on-one coaching or you may utilize your past or current demonstrated experience, which would require using the skills that you’ve acquired through the Leadership Academy to satisfy this requirement. If you prefer, you may also write a one-page paper describing your leadership role and the skills you utilized in that role.
