The Program

Under the leadership of President F. King Alexander, the President’s Scholars Program at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) continues to be the premier scholarship of its kind in the state. Recognized by the California Legislature, the program provides California high school seniors who are qualifying valedictorians from accredited high schools or National Merit Finalists and Semifinalists an opportunity to compete for an exceptional package that includes:

  • Full payment of in-state tuition and general student fees
  • Highest priority registration
  • Paid housing in campus residence halls
  • Sponsored meal plan (for National Merit scholars only)
  • Automatic acceptance to the University Honors Program
  • Personalized academic advising
  • Exclusive access to the President’s Scholars Center, including computer lab and study lounge
  • Opportunity for international study abroad programs
  • Special recognition at commencement with the President’s Scholar medallion
  • Four-year degree completion option
  • Campus student parking privileges
  • Annual book allowance

The four-year scholarship is renewable annually based on maintenance of satisfactory academic progress.

 

PRESIDENT’S SCHOLARS 1995-2008

 

Since the program’s inception in 1995, over 920 high school valedictorians and National Merit scholars have made California State University, Long Beach their University of Choice. The President’s Scholars Program has recruited 123 National Merit scholars, some of whom have achieved perfect standardized test scores. President’s Scholars come from 308 high schools throughout California, and from 41 counties as far as Siskiyou in the north to San Diego in the south.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

The prestigious President’s Scholars Program has entered its fourteenth year. Many of our scholars have graduated from “The Beach” to achieve even greater accomplishments. President’s Scholars alumni are now attending or have completed degrees from prestigious graduate and professional schools such as Yale, Harvard, Cornell, Columbia, Stanford, UC Berkeley, UCLA, USC, Johns Hopkins, Dartmouth, Duke, the Scripps Institute and right here at CSULB. Other scholars have chosen to enter the working world after graduation and are employed by U.S. government agencies, school districts, newspaper agencies, medical centers, hospitals, and companies such as ABC Television News, Boeing, Conoco Philips Refinery, Disney, Honeywell, Northrop Grumman, Deloitte & Touche, Raytheon, California Department of Fish and Game, and the Princeton Review.

Initiated in 1995 under the direction of former President Robert C. Maxson, the President’s Scholars Program is made possible through the generous support of the California State University, Long Beach Alumni Association, which established the CSULB Alumni Association Founding Endowment. The President’s Associates, the premier support group of the President's Scholars Program made up of individuals, corporations and foundations, provides significant annual contributions.
