Two CSULB students were competitively selected to participate in The Washington Center’s U.S.-China Bilateral Trade Internship Program in spring 2009. The program, now in its second year and based in Washington D.C., is the first of its kind and is sponsored in partnership with The Boeing Company. The Washington Center, one of several internship programs advertised via the Career Development Center’s Internship Program, provided two CSULB students with an opportunity to work in an internship program alongside eight students from two other U.S. universities and 10 students from Chinese universities. The interships focused on bilateral trade, best business practices and cross-cultural awareness between the two countries. Participating students were placed with organizations that focus on areas such as international trade and U.S.-China relations.
The 15-week internship began on February 13 and ended on May 22. Each CSULB student received a scholarship valued at $13,555 that covered program and housing fees, round trip airfare to Washington, D.C., health insurance and a monthly stipend. Participants also received full academic credit by enrolling in selected courses at CSULB during the spring term. In addition to the internship, students took an academic class in Washington, D.C. and completed a portfolio and various other assignments under the guidance of nationally recognized university faculty.
The two CSULB students who participated this spring were Isaac Choice, a senior majoring in accounting and a member of the CSULB Accounting Society, and Marketa Ostadalova, a senior majoring in finance and a member of Golden Key International Honor Society.
Choice stated on his program application, “One of my career goals is to become a CPA and have experience dealing with international accounting rules and regulations, such as the international financial reporting standards or international accounting standards.”
Ostadalova, an international student and native of the Czech Republic, noted that the program would be an invaluable experience in shaping the direction of her future career goals. She indicated an interest in learning more about the Chinese capital markets, various regulations and new developments within the economy, particularly as they relate to and influence the United States.
