Graduates include Adriana Angel, Testing and Evaluation Services, B.S., criminal justice, December 2008; Matthew Cabrera, Student Life and Development, M.S., counseling–student development in higher education, December 2008; Lethia Cobbs, Disabled Student Services, M.A., English, spring 2009; Diana Felix, Upward Bound, M.S., counseling–student development in higher education, spring 2009; Linda Peña, Student Health Services, M.A., English, spring 2009; Cynthia Riley, Student Services Division Office, M.P.A., December 2008; Margarita Rivera, Upward Bound, M.S., counseling–student development in higher education, spring 2009; and Sara Sanchez, Cal-SOAP, B.A., communication studies and Spanish, December 2008.
On April 29, Vivian Barrera, College Assistance Migrant Program, was awarded the 2009 Staff Advancement of Women Award by the President's Commission on the Status of Women. The award was presented at the commission’s spring 2009 research colloquium in recognition of Barrera’s ongoing commitment to the advancement of women at CSULB.
Candice Chick Shirey, CHAMPS Life/Skills, gave a presentation, “Best Practices with Implementation of the APPLE Model” at an Athletic Prevention Programming and Leadership Education Conference held January 16-18 in San Diego.
On March 30, Kristyn Chun, Counseling and Psychological Services, gave a peer-reviewed presentation, “Advocating for Institutional Change: When Individual Counseling is Not Enough” at the American College Personnel Association Annual Convention in Washington, D.C. On January 15, she also chaired a peer-reviewed symposium, “Research Implications: Social Justice in Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Communities of Color” at the National Multicultural Conference and Summit in New Orleans.
In March, CSU Chancellor Charles Reed appointed Brad Compliment, Counseling and Psychological Services, to the Select Committee on Student Mental Health Services. The committee was established to assess trends in student mental health services.
In January, Dave Edwards, University Student Union, was elected by the Auxiliary Organizations Association as president-elect for 2009, president for 2010 and past-president for 2011. In February, the executive committee named Doug Robinson, Student Services, as its student afffairs liaison. The AOA is comprised of more than 90 auxiliaries in The California State University and provides professional development opportunities, legislative/policy guidance and administrative support to its members.
In July, Diana Felix, Upward Bound, began a one-year term as president of the Southern California chapter of the Western Association of Educational Opportunity. Felix served as president-elect during 2008-09 and will serve as past-president during 2010-11. Upon her election in 2008, Feliz also began a three-year term as a member of the WESTOP board of directors.
In March, Ken Kelly, Student Transition and Retention Services, was installed as vice president-elect of region VI of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators in Higher Education. Kelly will begin a two-year term as regional vice president in March 2010 and he will serve an additional year as past regional vice president beginning in March 2012.
On March 7, Jeff Klaus, Student Life and Development, presented three workshops on ethical decision making at the 12th Annual University Leadership Conference at CSU Fullerton. Klaus also agreed to serve as an external reviewer of the Student Involvement Program for CSU Fresno's Administrative Program Review.
Caitlin Roberts, Student Life and Development, was named to the board of directors of the newly formed Association of Fraternal Leadership and Values. This association formed from the consolidation of the Western Region Greek Association and the Mid-America Greek Council Association, making it the largest association for fraternity and sorority groups in the country.
In July, Michele Scott, Educational Opportunity Center, began a one-year term as president of the Southern California chapter of WESTOP. Scott served as president-elect during 2008-09 and will serve as past-president during 2010-11. Upon her election in 2008, she also began a three-year term on the Council for Opportunity in Education.
At a Sexual Assault Awareness Month event held April 18, the Women's Studies Student Association honored Barbara Sinclair, Women's Resource Center, for her advocacy and efforts on behalf of women at CSULB.
