In May, Heidi Burkey and Maribel Hernandez, Student Health Services, received degrees from CSULB. Burkey received a master’s of public health and completed the certified health education specialist program, which is fulfilled by passing a national examination. Hernandez received a BS in business administration.
On October 16, Steve Katz, Judicial Affairs, and Ken Kelly, STARS/SOAR, spoke to Julie Van Camp’s Odyssey class on ethics. Katz and Kelly discussed academic integrity and dishonesty with the class.
On October 27, Ken Kelly was a panelist at the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators’ Western Regional Careers in Student Affairs Day held at CSU Fullerton. At the NASPA Western Regional Conference held November 8-11 in San Francisco, Kelly was awarded the Fred Turner Award for distinguished service to NASPA. Kelly is currently serving as treasurer for NASPA Region VI and is chair of the 2008 regional conference to be held in Long Beach. On December 1, Kelly served as a panelist before a graduate class at the University of Southern California discussing, “Career Paths in Student Affairs for First and Second Year Master’s Program Students.”
At a CSU Risk Management Conference in Sacramento on November 6, Jeff Klaus, Student Life and Development, gave a presentation, “Advisor Assessment and Sports Clubs.” On November 10, Klaus gave a joint presentation, “Public Policy and Legal Issues in Higher Education,” with Mike Hostetler, Associate Vice President/Dean of Students, at the NASPA Western Regional Conference in San Francisco.
Caitlin Roberts, Student Life and Development, was recently named director of Institutes and Pre-Conference Programs for the Western Region Greek Leadership Conference. Her duties include developing an emerging leaders’ institute, coordinating pre-conference programs, working with speakers and planning an etiquette luncheon.
In October, Vice President for Student Services Douglas W. Robinson, Ph.D., was named Administrator of the Year by the California Association for Postsecondary Education and Disability. Robinson has served as chair of the CSU Advisory Committee to the Chancellor on Services to Students with Disabilities for the past 15 years and was recently named as CSULB’s executive sponsor for the CSU Accessible
Technology Initiative.
