Career Development Center

On January 20-21, the CDC served as host for the California Association for Counseling and Development Regional Conference. Co-sponsored by the College of Education, the conference was attended by more than 100 professional counselors, including 40 CSULB counselor education graduate students. CACD President Paul Fornell, Career Development Center, led sessions each day on the future of counseling in California. Featured speakers were Patricia Arrendondo, president of the American Counseling Association, and Marie Wakefield, president-elect of ACA.

College Assistance Migrant Program

In August, CAMP received word that it was awarded $2.1 million over five years from the U.S. Department of Education. CAMP received $425,000 during 2005-06.

Counseling and Psychological Services

CAPS hosted the Asian American Psychological Association and the Division on Women’s Second Southern California Regional Conference, “Exploring the Intersections of Multiple Identities: Clinical, Research and Training Themes with Asians and Pacific Islanders,” on March 11 in The Pointe in the Walter Pyramid.

Dean of Students’ Office

On April 25, the 4th annual Ethics and Leadership luncheon was held. In attendance were 20 students from the Lois J. Swanson Leadership Academy and the Associated Students Judiciary. Professor Art Levine from the College of Business Administration addressed the group regarding current issues in ethics. Levine is a graduate of Harvard Law School and host of “Straight Talk,” a cable television program which features interviews and in-depth discussions with elected officials, business and community leaders.

Isabel Patterson Child Development Center

In April, the IPCDC received notice from the National Association for the Education of Young Children that the center earned accreditation. The center received special commendation for its interactions among children and staff, health and safety, nutrition and food service, curriculum and physical environment.

The center also recently received funding to replace the Dome. Home to the IPCDC’s after-school program since 1986, the Dome is being replaced with a single level, modular building. Construction began in June and will continue into the fall. When school resumes in September, the after-school program will be housed at Prisk Elementary School.

Judicial Affairs

An intercollegiate Judicial Affairs Officer’s Conference was hosted by CSULB on April 13, with representatives attending from the University of Southern California, Loyola Marymount University and the University of California, Los Angeles. Presenters were Greg Gossage of the Long Beach Police Department’s Crime Scene Investigation Unit, the Honorable Brad Andrews of the Los Angeles Superior Court-South District, and Steve Katz and Tom Malizia from the CSULB Judicial Affairs Office.

Women’s Resource Center

April 19 was Anti-Violence Awareness Day, and the WRC sponsored several activities throughout the day to educate the campus community about violence against women. Activities included Denim Day, the Clothesline Project, the Interact Performance and the Take Back the Night march through the campus, which culminated with a bonfire and a speak-out for survivors of violence and abuse.
