Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What can the Health Resource Center offer me?

The Health Resource Center (HRC) can offer additional health information regarding any health topics for all CSULB students. The HRC also offers services and programs to increase health awareness.

Q: Where is the Health Resource Center?

It is located on the top floor of Student Health Services, room 268 (SHS-268).

Q: Is the information reliable?

Yes, all health information provided to students has been screened by our doctors, nurses and staff.

Q: Can I make an appointment to see a doctor?

Yes, call Student Health Services at (562) 985-4771 to schedule an appointment.

Q: What is the Sexual Health Awareness Workshop (SHAW)?

Females seeking birth control prescriptions are strongly recommended to attend the Sexual Health Awareness Workshop (SHAW) prior to receiving a birth control prescription. This workshop is open to both male and female CSULB students. We talk about the gynecological examination, sexually transmitted infections, contraceptives and breast self examinations.

Q: How much does birth control cost?

Birth control methods range in price from $2.50 to $155.45 per month. We offer Depo Provera, NuvaRing, and the diaphragm. We do have a program called Family PACT that would provide your birth control prescription for free, if you qualify. Call 562-985-4771 to make an appointment for a Family PACT eligibility check first. View birth control costs.

Q: Where is the HIV testing?

HIV testing is offered in the Health Resource Center, Room 268 of the Student Health Services. You should make an appointment ahead of time as our appointments fill up fast.

Q: How much does HIV testing cost?

HIV testing is free in the Student Health Services. The City of Long Beach Department of Health & Human Services analyzes the samples for free because they sponsor our testing program.

Q: Is HIV testing confidential?

Yes. This means that we do use your name on your paperwork. This test and the results are NOT connected in any way to your medical or academic record on this campus.

The State of California adopted a new law in April 2006 that states HIV positive results are reportable, which means that if you test positive for HIV, your results and your name will be reported to the State Office of AIDS in Sacramento, California. Most states have been this way for many years, California chose to adopt this law in order to continue receiving funding from the Federal government for HIV/AIDS programs. Your name will NOT be shared with insurance companies, employers or any one else.

Q: When can I get my HIV testing results?

HIV testing in the Student Health Services is now done using a rapid technique. You will get your results in the same day, usually about 30 minutes. If you test positive, then you will have to provide a blood or oral sample for a regular test to be submitted to a laboratory and it takes 2 weeks to get your results back.

Q: What if I cannot make it to the hours you offer for HIV testing?

We can provide referrals to off-campus HIV testing locations. Call us at 562-985-4609 or check out the referrals that we provide on line. Referrals to other testing sites.
