The yellow brick road to getting the “Job”... |
There are a few things I need to work on as I prepare myself for a job when I graduate. They include an internship (which I keep saying I am going to get and keep failing), a resume (I know, I know), and preparing myself mentally for the job (actually visualizing myself there).
Internships are apparently vital to when I graduate. I have been hearing this for some time but I simply haven’t had the time. Not because I don’t think they are not important, but because the majority of internships available to me are unpaid.
“So what? That doesn’t matter, everyone needs to start somewhere,” says all of my teachers. “The experience is what matters the most.”
Well that’s fine and dandy for other people but not for me. I am a college student who pays for tuition, car and all my other expenses. Taking up the time to find an unpaid internship is unconceivable. I am very fortunate to have my current job that gives me access and hands-on experience. However I know I have to get my act together. My new plan is looking for something over the summer. Wish me luck! If anyone knows of any opportunities feel free to e-mail me at mduque@csulb.edu
Resume! Well I have one and I like it, but it seems that nobody else shares my sentiments. A couple of key tips for a resume that I will be using I found from a couple of sources. They include keeping the resume to one-page, using one font with only two different sizes, and proofreading (not just spell-check but having two different people review it). I have a design idea for my resume to make it stand out but I definitely won’t go overboard. This time next week I hope to have a resume to show.
So how should I start preparing myself mentally, well by first going to the store. I need to start dressing more professional, if I want that high-powered job I need to act like I should get it. The biggest thing for me will be not wearing my flip-flops, but I promise to try. Next would be to start cleaning out my car and my desk and room area. Why, because if I want to be organized and known at work as organized I need to get myself together. Another way to prepare myself is to keep current with daily and breaking news. As a journalism major I try to be updated on the news but at this crucial time its important to know what the market is like and what is going on in the world. You never know when a future employer might ask you a national issue and how sad would it be if I look lost. I want to act and be at the best of my game. Lastly I need to make sure I am staying on top of my time management. I need to use my planner and make sure I am accomplishing all of these things in a timely manner.
I would like to thank TR and el Jefe with providing me with the inspiration for this week’s blog. The articles found in PRSA Public Relations Tactics for April 2007 gave me a better perspective of what is waiting for me. I want to make them and myself proud.

Who is Meli The Gr8?When she is not posing next to trees, Meli Duque uses her time to trick unknowing freshmen into giving all their time to ASI. The self-proclaimed Beach Guru is a super-senior who has been involved, one way or another, in almost every type of organization on campus, which includes writing for both school newspapers (when that was allowed), joining a sorority, campaigning for student government, and even rowing on the women's crew team (it only lasted two weeks). Now she stays chained to a desk in ASI Communications where she writes, edits and awaits her chance to escape into the "real world" this spring. |
