Welcome to my unofficial Halloween week! |
Welcome to my unofficial Halloween week! I know, I know, Halloween is October 31st but I love the holiday so much that I celebrate it for a full week. To me it is not just about scaring people and wearing costumes with masks; it’s the whole package. It’s about seeing children with their parents dressed up, trick or treating around their neighborhood. It’s about families taking the time to decorate their homes and buy candy together to be able to pass out. It’s about a little girl wanting to be a princess and getting that chance for one day. It’s about a little boy getting to be the ninja and showing off his mad skills. Halloween isn’t scary for me, it’s about community.
Last year for Halloween I was in Barcelona Spain. I had already been there two months and would be there for another two months. At that point, I was getting a little home sick. So I got together with my American friends that I made in Spain and we planned a huge Halloween bash. We started the day off scouring around the city to look for pumpkins to carve. Well that was a problem. We only found one medium sized one and two little ones and… a pineapple. That’s right ladies and gentlemen we carved a pineapple, and may I say it looked amazing! Then we went costume shopping and could only find accessories but we made due with what we had. Our biggest goal of the night was to find a Halloween party. We heard rumors about a few, so we set out on the metro and found…nothing. In the end we were just a bunch of Americans in costumes on the metro but it is still one of my favorite memories.
Here in the states we have so many options when it comes to decorations. I made it my goal to go all out this year. I made part of my costume (with the help of my mommy who can sew) and I am an active participant in our office Halloween decorations. This year in the University Student Union we are having contests between the different departments. ASI COMMUNICATIONS IS GOING TO WIN! Well, at least I hope so! Our theme is a spooky forest and it has been great getting to work with everyone in a more creative fashion. I know that one of the designers Arian is great with leaves and that Mike our web guy loves Halloween because it lands on his birthday. Ryan (graphic designer) and Talisha (marketing assistant) both love to scare people and most importantly Abel, another graphic designer, is amazing at constructing branches. This is what Halloween is all about- community. I can’t wait to get my candy!

Who is Meli The Gr8?When she is not posing next to trees, Meli Duque uses her time to trick unknowing freshmen into giving all their time to ASI. The self-proclaimed Beach Guru is a super-senior who has been involved, one way or another, in almost every type of organization on campus, which includes writing for both school newspapers (when that was allowed), joining a sorority, campaigning for student government, and even rowing on the women's crew team (it only lasted two weeks). Now she stays chained to a desk in ASI Communications where she writes, edits and awaits her chance to escape into the "real world" this spring. |
