Lack of Manners

What ever happened to manners? When you see someone with their hands full how about opening their door? When someone opens the door for you how about a thank you? I know we live in a society that does not enforce small etiquette skills but that doesn’t mean we should forget about it. On the contrary I think it’s really important for us to take the time to say “thank you” and “you’re welcome.”

I was talking to a couple of my co-workers about smiling on this campus. For some reason CSULB students don’t like to look up and smile while they are walking on campus. I know we don’t know each other but I always enjoy when you catch eyes with someone and they smile. It’s not flirting, and I am not doing it for any particular reason except a pleasant hello to someone on campus. My favorite thing so far is just smiling at people and seeing their response. Some people smile back others have given me a funny look. Oh well.

Okay so why am I mentioning it…well because this past week we had the Recreation & Wellness Center Elections and in the coming weeks we will have Student Government Elections and Campaigning. That means CSULB students will have a lot of people coming up to them this month. So here are a couple of my tips when it comes to campaigning etiquette for voters and candidates:

Potential Voters:

I know you don’t want people to be coming up to you so instead of ignoring them, just say “No thanks”

If you have the chance, get their stuff and read it so that way when it’s time for voting you have information

Remember that they are not there to annoy you but to try to get your vote… they need you.

Candidates:

Do not be intimidating or rude.

If someone says “No thanks,” well except that.

Remember that while you pass out your information to stay “short and sweet” with your stuff.

You need them to vote for you… so if you are rude that won’t get you anywhere.

Meli Duque

Who is Meli The Gr8?

When she is not posing next to trees, Meli Duque uses her time to trick unknowing freshmen into giving all their time to ASI.

The self-proclaimed Beach Guru is a super-senior who has been involved, one way or another, in almost every type of organization on campus, which includes writing for both school newspapers (when that was allowed), joining a sorority, campaigning for student government, and even rowing on the women's crew team (it only lasted two weeks). Now she stays chained to a desk in ASI Communications where she writes, edits and awaits her chance to escape into the "real world" this spring.
