Come to campus for class, stay for a convenient way to work...

So now that we are starting to get into the swing of things on campus I am constantly asked one simple question from all the freshmen and transfer students that I got to meet during the summer while working at SOAR. “Do you know where I can get a job?” Luckily for these people, as the self-proclaimed Beach Guru I do have an answer to this question.

There are tons of opportunities all throughout the campus including food services, sales and more specialized jobs for you to get a paycheck for. There is no reason to get a job off campus when you have to be here already for classes and there are jobs available here to conveniently work with your schedule.

ASI is one of the many departments that give students jobs on campus. At ASI you can work at any of our departments including the Isabel Patterson Child Development Center, the Associated Students Business Office, Associated Students Recycling Center, the Beach Pride Center…you get the picture. The University Student Union (the USU) alone offers a ton of jobs in every area from the Music Listening Lounge and the Maxson Center to the new information center. At ASI there are more than 175 student staff compared to the 50 full-time staff. What does that tell you?   Whatever your skills may be you are welcomed. We hire student staff all the time. As a matter of fact I just heard from a friend that they are currently looking for someone to work on Wednesdays at 3:30 p.m. to be the recording secretary for senate. How cool is that?

It is important to work in an environment that understands that we are students first and that is definitely what ASI does. Most of us work here in the USU, so this place is filled with student staff that love working in a positive environment and enjoy making connections here on campus. It is a second home to many of us.

The best and easiest way to see what we have available is to either check the employment board on the second floor near the Associated Students Business Office or to go online and check Beachlink. At Beachlink it’s just a simple log in process that will provide you with all the jobs that are available at ASI and on campus. Try it out and hopefully I’ll see you around.

Who is Meli The Gr8?

When she is not posing next to trees, Meli Duque uses her time to trick unknowing freshmen into giving all their time to ASI.

The self-proclaimed Beach Guru is a super-senior who has been involved, one way or another, in almost every type of organization on campus, which includes writing for both school newspapers (when that was allowed), joining a sorority, campaigning for student government, and even rowing on the women's crew team (it only lasted two weeks). Now she stays chained to a desk in ASI Communications where she writes, edits and awaits her chance to escape into the "real world" this spring.
