Programs and events sponsored by Project Safe are planned to increase awareness of related issues. Additionally, programs celebrate and support survivors of violence, sharing stories and experiences which have strengthened and informed them. The entire campus participates in these activities - women, men, students, staff, faculty, police, administrators - anyone who wishes to be involved. You will notice that many of the same components are present at various Project Safe events although they are different in focus as they relate to the issue addressed. Watch for dates and feel free to participate any way you can. Make a note to check calendar regularly as these times approach!
January is Stalking Awareness Month and puts the spotlight on this crime, providing information about the nature of stalking, and resources for dealing with it, which is particularly important and appropriate.
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month which brings attention to issues surrounding sexual assault and increases the understanding of ways to protect oneself and to support survivors whatever form of assault they have experienced, from rape by a stranger to rape by an acquaintance, and including inappropriate touching. Defining "consent" and "coercion" is often a discussion topic in workshops. Denim Day and a community-wide Speak Out event on campus are unique to April's activities.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and presents informative programming to raise awareness of the impact of relationship violence on all our lives. It also celebrates survivors of such violence by hearing their stories of struggle and hope; and joins with the entire Long Beach community in providing dialogue opportunities, resources and potential solutions. Programs include workshops devoted to relationship concerns, communication, and keynote speakers on specific topics.
In addition to these events, there are several related projects which often are connected to them, including:
