CSULB follows the unit and level recommendations of the Guide to the Evaluation of Education Experience in the Armed Forces and automatically awards the appropriate level of elective credit as indicated.
Enrollment Services follows the American Council on Education (ACE) recommendation on Basic Training or Recruit Training as well as the recommendation of Executive Order 1036:
Upto 3 Units of Area E GE credit will be granted
As the ACE recommendation on the number of units to be awarded varies by branch and sometimes by the type of experience the service member has completed, any units recommended by ACE in excess of the three units granted for Area E will be awarded in lower division general elective credit.
The following is a summary of credit that would be granted based on the current military training program and ACE recommendations:
| Military Branch | Area E Credit | Elective Credit | Total Units |
| Army | 3 | 2 | 5 |
| Navy | 2 | 0 | 2 |
| Marine Corps | 3 | 5 | 8 |
| Coast Guard | 3 | 3 | 6 |
| Air Force | 3 | 1 | 4 |
CSU Executive Order 1036 provides the minimum standards by which campuses must evaluate credit for formal instruction in non collegiate settings; the standards for awarding credit are governed by ACE, which recommends credit at four levels. The CSU does not accept credit recommended at the ‘vocational certificate’ level; for all other recommendations, at least general elective credit at the appropriate level (lower division, upper division, or graduate) must be granted. The EO requires campuses to consider the awarding of more specific credit whereever possible including the use of military training in satisfying area E.
Current CSULB practice is as follows:
CSULB follows the unit and level recommendations of the Guide to the Evaluation of Education Experience in the Armed Forces and automatically awards the appropriate level of elective credit as indicated.
GE credit is considered for Department of Defense Foreign Language courses where the levels are comparable to language courses we offer.
To receive GE credit for other types of training or education, students currently need department recommendation and must file an Academic Appeals Petition.
To receive major credit, students need department approval. Given the somewhat cumbersome process and the high percentage of courses that would not be appropriate for GE or major credit, there is currently no proactive approach in place to encourage or identify further course evaluation. Cases where the student requests further review are facilitated.
