About Veterans University Vision, Mission, and Goals

Our Vision

Serve as the national model for veterans transitional programs.

Our Mission

Veterans University provides collaborative support to successfully transition our disabled and non-disabled veterans physically, emotionally, and professionally, back into America's communities.

Our Goals

1) Tailor selected educational programs to meet veterans needs

2) Provide advocacy and transitional support

3) Provide critical information for successful transition

4 ) Maximize the resources for veterans by collaborating with the VA, VSO’s, and local community

5) Provide expert knowledge to the veteran support community

Veterans University (VU) is committed to the successful transition of student veterans attending California State University Long Beach. Through on campus collaboration and a network of supporting services here at CSULB, VU strives to increase the number of student veterans successfully obtaining formal education and follow-on employment. VU will also work with on campus departments to develop veteran-friendly policies, certificate education and internships, and orientation programs that introduce our former servicemembers to not only the campus but the civilian world awaiting them. Our unique location next to the VA Healthcare System, Long Beach provides us with added capabilities to successfully transition veterans not just by providing education but also by providing critical health services to ensure all veterans have a chance to attain their dreams.

The VA Long Beach Healthcare System is an outstanding medical facility that has treated thousands of returning veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan. Comprehensive medical care is provided at the state-of-the-art medical center and community based outpatient clinics including a nationally prominent Spinal Cord Injury Center and a highly prestigious “gait lab.”  Even though these outstanding services exist, the rehabilitation and transitional services provided by VA can be strengthened by utilizing the expertise of two Universities that are well known for their outstanding treatment, rehabilitation, transitional and educational programs.  To this end, a unique collaboration between the VA Health Care System in Long Beach, CA and the campuses of California State University Long Beach and Dominquez Hills has been formed and named Veterans University .  The purpose of this merger is to expand transitional services in a “one-stop shopping” approach for veterans returning from war.  These include educational programs, career training, counseling and clinical services, as well as employment opportunities.

A multidisciplinary approach will be used to engage faculty, staff, researchers, physicians and clinicians in a holistic treatment approach to maximize the efficacy of transitional services provided.  Under the supervision of the VA Healthcare System at Long Beach, the Universities will specifically provide the following services:

  • Speech, Language and Hearing Therapy
  • Family and Individual Counseling
  • Degree and Certificate  Programs
  • Physical Therapy and Kinesiotherapy
  • Therapeutic Recreation Programs
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Workforce Development Programs leading to employment
