Spring 2008 | Volume 1, Issue 1

Operation: Return to The Beach

Now is the Time

Happy New Year! For many, the new year brings a sense of renewal and fresh starts. It is a time to reflect on the previous year and a time to set goals for the new year. We’re hoping that you fall among these people and are ready for a new beginning at Cal State Long Beach. It’s not too late for you to return to “The Beach” but you need to act now.

What you need to do now:

  1. File for Educational Leave of Absence (for spring semester). Deadline: May 30, 2008 with $10 late fee if you haven’t done so already.
  2. Register for remedial course(s) at a local community college. View a full listing of course equivalencies. If you see a blank space this indicates that the department has not accepted this course. Many online courses are not accepted by the university; check with the PASS office before registering for an online course.
  3. Continue membership in Operation: Return to The Beach

If you are completing coursework and returning in the fall 2008 semester follow the above directions and the following:

Upon successful completion of your course(s) you must visit the PASS office once your grades are posted online, so that they can verify completion and release your hold. If your grades do not get posted, then you must:

  • Pick up a Grade Verification form from the PASS office AS-14) and return it completed by no later than 1 week prior to the start of the fall semester
  • Hand deliver transcripts from the community college to the PASS office (AS-14) as soon as you can, but no later than August 25, 2008. You can’t register until you do this.
  • Make sure to attend the Re-enter The Beach program (mini orientation, academic advising and registration) this summer (date TBD).

Educational Leave of Absence Information

If you plan to return to CSULB next fall, you must file for an Educational Leave of Absence by the end of the Spring 2008 semester (May 30, 2008) if you have not already done so. To pick up an Educational Leave of Absence form, go to 101 Brotman Hall or download the form online.

Important Reminders

To be eligible to register for classes for Fall 2008, you must be finished with your remedial coursework before Monday, September 1, 2008 and have done the following:

  • Filed an Educational Leave of Absence for Spring 2008 to be allowed to return to CSULB for Fall 2008 without reapplying (Deadline: May 30, 2008)
  • Submit your grade verifications to the PASS office once you complete your remedial coursework.
  • Look for information regarding our Re-enter The Beach program to be held in Summer 2008.

For Your Information

This is the first year for Operation: Return to The Beach. Through the support of the Vice President of Student Services, Dr. Doug Robinson, the STARS/SOAR office has been granted funding to provide assistance to students in similar academic situations as yours.

In the inaugural semester, we had 32 students register to participate in this program. Over the winter break, 2 of the 32 students joined us for a “Re-enter The Beach” session which provided an overview of the university’s academic policies as well as advising and the opportunity to register for spring classes. Despite the small numbers, the program was a great success. We hope tyou attend our next “Re-enter The Beach” session this summer. Good luck this semester!
