First Year Programs

Goal: Encourage Students to Actively Engage in Their First Year Experience

The First Year Experience (FYE) Certification Program is a collaborative workshop series designed to address important academic information and campus resources at critical points in the first year. Topics in the fall semester are geared towards helping students with their academic transition, while the spring semester focuses more on enhancing the college experience outside of the classroom and gaining important leadership and career experience.

Students, who become members of the First Year Experience (FYE) and complete 10 or more FYE workshops or events, will earn an FYE Certificate of Completion and be invited to the Celebration of Leaders, where they will be recognized for their achievement. This program is open to both first-year freshman and transfer students.

To see the requirements for the FYE Certificate of Completion please CLICK HERE for the PDF version of the FYE Certificate Checklist. (359KB)

In addition to the FYE Certificate Program, other featured first year programs are:

Classroom Walking Tours

Classroom Walking Tours take place the week before the start of the fall semester and are tailored towards students’ class schedules. The tours are done in small groups, with advisors following the students’ schedules and taking them to the door of each of the classes on their schedule. Most tours are approximately 1 ½ hours long.

Lifeguard Stations

Lifeguard Stations are blue tented stations set up across campus, at highly travelled areas and are staffed by SOAR Advisors and various professional staff the first two days of the semester. Students who are lost, having trouble finding classes, or who have questions can stop by any one of our blue Lifeguard Stations and receive assistance.

FYE "Members Only" Events

Special events and workshops are held throughout the academic year for FYE Members Only. These events and workshops are designed to be more personalized and interactive so that members become better acquainted with other first-year students, faculty, and staff as well as campus resources. Past "Members Only" events have included Pizza Mixers, Athletic Events, Mocktail Programs, and Rec Center activities. For more information about the FYE Membership and how to join, click here.
