A SOAR Advisor is a current CSULB student who is hired to assist new students in their transition to Cal State Long Beach. SOAR Advisors work closely with students to advise them in class selection and assist them with registering for their first semester of classes. SOAR Advisors also orient new students to the university by providing them information about campus policies, resources, as well as provide students with an interactive campus tour.
SOAR Advisors conduct group advising sessions that focus on general education, major requirements, the selection of appropriate classes and online registration. In addition, SOAR Advisors conduct interactive campus tours to help newly-admitted students become familiar with the campus and learn about the different resources, services, and opportunities offered by the University. It is also the responsibility of SOAR Advisors to aid in the implementation of continued STARS/SOAR programming, and to assist with the marketing and recruitment of new SOAR Advisors.
SOAR Advisors can expect full-time summer hours with additional responsibilities throughout the academic year with various programs and events.
To be determined based on qualifying criteria including prior experience, relevant training, and education level.
SOAR Advisors are required to successfully complete all necessary training, Pre-Advisor Training (April/May) and SOAR Advisor Training (June) in order to facilitate SOAR workshops.
