In March, I had the opportunity to staff the CSULB Human Relations Summit, an annual program designed to explore personal identity, expose stereotypes and encourage dialogue on race, ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation.

The summit is a collaboration among several university departments. Each department plays a critical role in addressing relevant topics and facilitating meaningful discussions with summit participants. Departments include Student Life and Development, Educational Equity Services and Counseling and Psychological Services. According to CSULB’s Director of Student Life and Development Jeff Klaus, who planned and implemented the summit, “What’s crucial for us to understand, as educators in a diverse society, is the importance of personal development and the impact that racism, sexism and other forms of discrimination have on students. The Human Relations Summit is a specific example of a quality educational program available to CSULB students outside the classroom and how student development programming engages students to challenge themselves in new ways.”
