Scholarships Awarded to Summer Bridge Students

Each year, the Educational Opportunity Program awards scholarships to students who set excellent examples and demonstrate outstanding effort, improvement and attitude during the Summer Bridge Program. While there were many outstanding students in 2007, four scholarships of $250 and a certificate of recognition were awarded to students in two categories.

The Great Strides Award is based on a student’s level of effort and consistent improvement during the program. The Spirit of Summer Bridge Award is given to students who have consistently had a positive attitude, participated, made great efforts academically and contributed to the program both inside and outside of the classroom. These students are well-rounded representatives of Summer Bridge.

Lizeth Gonzales and Kevin Quintero, both recipients of the Great Strides Award, were nominated by their math and English instructors. The two students took advantage of the opportunities that were given to them during the program. “What I liked about the Summer Bridge Program was that it gave me a golden opportunity to experience life in a university. It gave me an opportunity to prepare myself morally and academically for the many challenges I would face as a first-year student an Cal State Long Beach," says Quintero. He says he gained valuable skills during the program, including personal responsibility and time management.

The Spirit of Summer Bridge Award recipients were Ana Cardenas and Melvin Lopez. Both students were very involved in their classes, during enrichment activities and inside the residence halls. Since receiving the award, each of the four recipients has continued to make great strides in their education. “The Summer Bridge Program kick-started my college life experience. It allowed me to make great new friends and equip myself with the proper tools to succeed in college. With the help of a resourceful network, my first semester at CSULB went by fast and very smoothly,” shares Lopez.

On behalf of EOP, congratulations to the scholarship recipients for their outstanding achievement!
