EOP Mentor ProgramThe EOP Mentor Program got off to a great start last fall semester. Thirty EOP students are actively participating and have committed a full academic year to work with the program.
Mentor Teamwork Exercise Retention is the goal of the mentor program. The mentors must complete an intensive training program which covers issues of diversity, communication, time management, goal setting, leadership and the laws of mentoring in an effort to develop skills to support, validate and encourage mentees to stay in school. The mentors and mentees are required meet once each week for a minimum of one hour; however, many of them choose to spend several hours together each day. The EOP Mentor program participants were asked to share their experiences with the program:“The EOP Mentor Program is the perfect opportunity for me to give back…my main desire is to touch the lives of my mentees in a positive manner.” – Ignacio Hernandez, Mentor “Cynthia (my mentee) and I are able to relate to one another due to our similar life experiences…we plan to continue to grow from and with each other.” – Chantel Vaultz, Mentor “By volunteering, I believe that I have grown not only as a student but as a woman.”– Tania Gamez, Mentor “My mentor, Karina, turned into a good friend, someone who guides me and listens to me when I feel lost.” – Magaly Santieseban, Mentee “The EOP Mentor Program is not only beneficial to the mentee, but this program is very rewarding to the mentor as well. We learn and grow together.” – Zion Redie, Mentor “The EOP Mentor Program is a great opportunity for individuals from different ethnicities to come together and learn more about one another through campus activities and resources that we may not have known about otherwise.” – Tiffany Bitting, Mentor To receive additional information regarding the EOP Mentor Program, contact Yvette Moss, EOP counselor and Mentor Program coordinator, via e-mail mossy@csulb.edu or phone at (562) 985-5637. |
