Jiu Jitsu is one of the most ancient forms of martial arts. It was created centuries ago in China and Japan. Jiu Jitsu is known as the "gentle art" because it makes it possible to subdue an opponent without throwing a single punch.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu focuses on bringing the fight to the ground utilizing holds, arm locks, chokes, leg locks and strikes, to defeat an opponent.

Our club is affiliated with Southbay Jiu Jitsu and has highly qualified instructors on hand to teach. Bob Bass, the first American Black Belt under the world-famous Machado Brothers, founded Southbay Jiu Jitsu. Bob shocked the Jiu Jitsu World in 1995 by beating the world champion at that time. Bob is known throughout the US and Brazil as one of the most technical and well-respected Jiu Jitsu practitioners the US has ever produced. Bob will be making frequent appearances at club meetings to instruct our members.

Club Description

The Sailing Association is one of the oldest continuing recreational clubs on campus. The club maintains it's own fleet of varying craft in order to make sailing accessible and affordable for the CSULB community and to promote sailing as a life-long sport.

In addition to recreational day-sailing by individual club skippers, the club's primary activity is instruction. Lessons, seminars, and practice sessions are available for those at many skill levels, including those who know nothing about sailing.

There are many scheduled events where the club day-sails as a group. Existing skippers check out the boats. Non-skippers may sail under the supervision of any skipper. These events are diverse, from beach catamaran sailing to moonlight harbor cruises to sailing amongst the Tall Ships. Club boats also turn out for local events such as the Alamitos Bay Christmas Boat Parade and the Fourth of July fireworks at the Queen Mary.

Although the purpose of the club is largely instructional and recreational, there are also many opportunities to race the club's boats. Club skippers are increasingly making their presence known in local yacht club regattas and have proven themselves serious contenders.

Karate may be defined as a weaponless means of self-defense consists of dynamic offensive and defensive techniques using all parts of the body to their maximum advantage.

Karate as Athletic Training: The values of Karate to modern man are numerous. In our everyday lives we often forget the value of exercise to both our physical and mental health. The practice of karate tones the body, develops coordination, quickens reflexes, and builds stamina.

Karate as Self-Defense: Karate is one of the most dynamic of all the martial arts. The trained karateka is able to coordinate his mind and body perfectly, thereby allowing him to unleash tremendous physical power at will. Therefore, it is not the possession of great physical strength that makes a strong karateka; rather it is the ability to coordinate mind and body. Upon developing this ability, even the smallest person finds that he has within himself the power to deliver a devastation blow to any would-be attacker.

Karate to Develop Clarity of Mind: The serious practice of karate develops composure, a clearer thought process, deeper insight into one's mental capabilities, and more self-confidence. In this karate is not an end, but a means to an end. It is an activity in which advancing age is not a hindrance. Rather it encourages proficiency and the keen coordination of mind and body.

Ultimate frisbee is a game in which two teams use a plastic disc to score goals. Using a combination of skill and strategy, players pass the frisbee to each other across the field to get to the end zone. Meanwhile, the opposing team will be running around trying to swat or intercept the frisbee so that they can gain possession of the frisbee and try to score goals.

One great thing about Ultimate is that it is a non-contact sport, unlike football or hockey.

Everyone needs to get out and have fresh air and good exercise every now and then. Nothing beats the feeling of having a good workout, and being with a group who enjoys the same activities as you do.
