 AbstractAssociated Students Incorporated (ASI)

Ideally, educational institutions should provide students with areas to relax, meet friends, and/or attend a variety of events that supplement the classroom instruction.  Such a place is the University Student Union (USU) at California State University, Long Beach.  It has been referred to as the “living room” of the campus, and indeed it is.  Students, as well as the university community, have a resource that offers different-sized rooms for departments and pro­grams to hold events, as well as areas for relaxing or meeting with friends or classmates.

The USU also offers arecreational activities, a number of food vendors that com­plement other food services on campus, as well as a place to grab a quick cup of coffee, juice, or a sandwich.  Not only are nutritional needs met, but students are also free to meet and interact with other members of the community. 

It was the intent of this program review to look at the quality of delivery of serv­ices from the perspective of the student and other potential clients related to the Union’s program goals.  Based on an analysis of responses from collected data, it appears to be meeting its goals in serving students and providing a place for learning and recreation. 

The Union not only houses a variety of vendors, but it is also the primary residence of student government and leadership.  The building houses such programs as the Associated Students, Inc. (ASI; the student government body), Student Life and Development (SLD; resource for student groups), the ASI Business Office, the Union Newspaper, an activities/games area, and KBEACH (a student-operated radio station). 

Responses from students indicated a fairly high degree of satisfaction with the services that the USU offers.  Some recommendations were made to improve current offerings.

The USU offers a unique opportunity for students to be­come involved in the culture of the university and expand his/her education outside of the classroom.

Abstract: Career Development Center (CDC)  

The purpose of the program review of the Career Development Center was to address four questions and areas of concerns:

Utilization of the Career Center: Do students utilize the CDC to its potential?

Job Seeking Preparedness: Are students prepared for the job seeking process?

Support and Qualifications of Staff: What is the level of quality and support students can expect to receive from the CDC staff?

Employer Utilization and Perception: Do employers take full advantage of the services available through the CDC?  And, what is the perception of the CDC?

Results indicate that the Career Center is held in high regard by its clients.  It is commended for providing an important connection to the world of employment by creating an environment for networking and information exchange.  In addition, the activities sponsored by the CDC allow for an exploration of employment opportunities not normally associated with particular majors.  Students are particularly grateful for workshops such as resume writing and developing interview skills.  Many students wished they had utilized the services of the CDC much sooner in their academic careers.  Some suggested that lower division students be required to acquaint themselves with the CDC. 

Comments made by students are reflected in the concerns of the CDC staff, who feel that given the size of the campus, the Center is underutilized.  Staff members have seen the number of users go down in recent years.  The staff is dedicated to making the Career Development Center the first stop in a student’s search for employment before and after graduation.  To this end, they are studying different strategies to make students more aware of their facility and services.

Abstract: Housing and Residential Life (HRL)  

The purpose of the program review of Housing and Residential Life was to look at its ability to meets stated goals and objectives.  The HRL offers a unique opportunity for students to become engaged and immersed in the culture of the university while providing students with both social and academic learning opportunities.

Like many other residential life programs, HRL must confront issues concerning the safety and well being of its residents.  Students see living on-campus as an opportunity to have experiences not available at home. However, conflicts will arise and must be addressed by the HRL staff and the university. The HRL staff has been successful in understanding and meeting the needs of its charges.

Abstract: Student Orientation, Advising & Registration (SOAR)

The purpose of the program review of the Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration program (SOAR) was to address four questions:

  • Is the transition to CSU, Long Beach smooth; that is, do students feel connected to the institution as a result of their participation in SOAR?
  • Do SOAR activities make the transition to CSULB easier for students from previous institutions?
  • Is CSULB doing enough for incoming students as they make their transitions?
  • Do students who participate in SOAR do better academically than those who do not?

Results indicate that the majority of SOAR participants were satisfied with their orientation experience and found many of the activities and information helpful in their transition to CSULB.  Students found program and university staff to be available but felt that the selection and training process of SOAR staff needed to be reviewed.  In addition, the extent of agreement with the content of workshops differed between first-time freshmen and transfer students.  This was expected as transfer students already had knowledge of college policies and procedures. 

Avariety of campus efforts exist that attempt to address the first- year experiences of students.  The successes of these efforts have been due to the collaborative spirit and dedication of University staff in creating a nurturing learning environment for students.  It is suggested that the Division of Student Services create and support a full-time SOAR office that works closely with the Office of University Outreach and School Relations, which recruits new students.  These two offices, with the assistance and input from other departments, should study and plan programs that will impact the students’ final decision to attend CSULB.  The SOAR program should set guidelines for participation to ensure consistent quality. 

With regard to academic performance, data indicate that students who participated in SOAR did better than those who did not.  This was attributed to the fact that students who took part in SOAR were made aware of deadlines and procedures for adding and dropping classes and available campus resources for academic advising. 

The SOAR Program continually looks for ways to enhance the learning and development of CSULB Students.

Abstract: Women’s Resource Center (WRC)

This program review looked at the services of the WRC to determine if it was meeting its program goals.  Based on the collected data that included the analysis of data from questionnaires, it is meeting its goals and contributing to the success of the University and the Student Services Division. 

The WRC is a unique program which provides a variety of services, programs, and referrals to its clientele.  It also provides a nurturing environment where female studentz can gather and engage in open and honest dialogue with peers and faculty, study, or take a break between classes. 

While its primary goal is to provide opportunities for female students, the WRC invites all students to use its services, which enhances its value as an important campus resource.
