At CSULB, we collect many different types of data about our students and use these findings to improve our practices. On the pages of this website, you will see highlights of what we consider to be important characteristics and learning outcomes of our student body. The diversity of our programming is great, but we work for common purposes: to enhance the learning and development of our students, and help them succeed in accomplishing their goals.
Our data collection procedures vary from large-scale surveys to department-based assessments of programs that impact student success. CSULB is a participant in the Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) for the annual freshman survey as well as the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), a survey program for measuring student satisfaction and campus engagement. Departments throughout the University systematically collect data using quantitative and qualitative procedures. In addition, CSULB conducts its own student satisfaction survey every three years, and participates in the national Collegiate Learning Assessment for measuring critical writing skills of freshmen and seniors.
Moreover, Institutional Research & Assessment offers programs such as On-Demand Reporting and Dashboard that provide instant reports of enrollment trends, student enrollment throughout the institution, and student progress to degree.
A major component of the Division of Student Services vision is to "embrace a culture of evidence that strives for continued quality improvement in our programs and services." The strength of our assessment program comes from the partnerships we enjoy throughout the University to collect and analyze data. We are fully committed to maintaining and strengthening our assessment practices for the well-being and growth of our students.
