This week roof top mechanical pads were completely poured out. Pool excavation work continues on the South side of the lot. LEED point calculation continues as recycled steel and soil is used for the facility during construction. Landscaping plans are also in review this week to make sure all borders and curbs match up.
As interior and exterior framing is ongoing, inspections and tests for proper duct work installation and sewer drain flow are being scheduled this week. ASI and construction management have also been working with the chosen food vendor to create a floor plan for the healthy café dining area in the lobby.

The month of May marks as the beginning of structural construction. Structural steel is still in fabrication as slab on grade pouring for various sections continues into the next week. This is a critical point in the construction process for finalizing all contracts and design elements for the interior of the facility.

During this week of construction underground plumbing for grid sections 3 and 4 are underway. This includes pipe installation, testing and restoring grade. Preparation for the upcoming pour of slab on grade (foundation) is also ongoing. The slab area will be done in four pours. Major sewer and storm line work at the edge of the tennis courts was also finished over the week of spring break.

During this week of construction the pouring of structural concrete is ongoing. Exterior curbs and rebar templates are to be set and prepared for the installation of masonry dowels next week. The central site where the facility is being constructed is broken down into a grid of lines to keep engineers and crews on track. From these numbered gridlines, engineers and crews can plot out placement of electrical wiring and plumbing. As construction proceeds, the gridlines will become more visible in the live shots.

During this week of construction, after seismic inspection, additional Geo-Piers and footings were installed by the end of the week. Due to rain delays construction crews have had to pump out pooling water. Foundation excavation is scheduled to begin on February 19 but with more rain expected, this date may change. LEED coordination and performance meetings continue as construction progresses.

This week the footing layouts have been put into place as the installation of Geo-Piers continues. All department timelines have been submitted and ASI project coordinators have sent out Request for Proposals (RFP’s) for interior and exterior furniture, facility membership systems, and security and surveillance. Some rain days caused the postponement of some earthwork but have not affected the overall construction schedule.

This week all excavation materials have been removed and the installation of Geo-Piers continues. Surveying for storm drains and basins has begun and will continue into the next week. All blading and the cutting of verticals was finished prior to Friday’s Ground Breaking Ceremony. It is now the sixth week of construction and the Student Recreation and Wellness Center project is right on schedule.

This week geopier installation begins, and will last for about 18 working days, while major excavation continues. Tuesday’s LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) kickoff meeting successfully covered all LEED standards for each construction aspect of the project. The goal for the Student Recreation and Wellness Center is to become LEED Silver Certified which is one of the highest ratings for “green” buildings that recognizes performance in five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality. To find more information about LEED certifications please visit www.usgbc.org.
The SRWC official groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for Friday, January 30 at 11 a.m. on the construction site located in Parking Lot 11 on Palo Verde Avenue. Construction will be postponed shortly for the event.
