SRWC Construction Updates

Week of October 19th

This week roof top mechanical pads were completely poured out. Pool excavation work continues on the South side of the lot. LEED point calculation continues as recycled steel and soil is used for the facility during construction. Landscaping plans are also in review this week to make sure all borders and curbs match up.

Week of October 12th

As interior and exterior framing is ongoing, inspections and tests for proper duct work installation and sewer drain flow are being scheduled this week. ASI and construction management have also been working with the chosen food vendor to create a floor plan for the healthy café dining area in the lobby.

Week of October 5th

External framing at the South and East elevations was finished this week and the cutting and digging of soil cement for the outdoor pool has begun. The maintenance yard and buildings should be finished by the end of the month.

Week of September 28th

This week the exterior skin or framing around the MAC (Multi-Activity Court) is three quarters of the way done while framing around the rest of the facility is ongoing. As the rain season approaches, crews are working diligently to prepare the high roof areas to be finished by the end of the month of October.

Week of September 21st
During this 40th week of construction, exterior framing on the South elevation has begun. Soil treatment has begun in the outside pool deck area and will continue into next week. Structural masonry work is also underway in the Gymnasium area (Areas 1 and 2).

Week of September 14th
This week duct work began in Area 4 (Southeast corner) which includes the service building, racquet ball courts, rock wall area, and outdoor equipment checkout room and into the men’s locker room. Interior framing (weld tabs and hangers) is also underway. LEED meetings continued this week reviewing all material and point check lists.

Week of September 7th
This week structural masonry began in Areas 1 and 2 (Northeast/west corners). Fireproofing continues while MEP (Mechanical, Electric and Plumbing) hanging in high areas begins.

Week of August 31st
This week all slab pours on the first floor are complete. Fireproofing continues on the 1st floor and through the gymnasium. Pre construction meetings for construction on the outdoor pool also took place this week.

Week of August 24th
During this 36th week of construction, all structural steel has been finished. Slab on grade was finished Monday and fire proofing on the 1st floor has begun.

Week of August 17th
This week decks at the service and pool buildings in the southeast corner (Area 4) have been poured. Fire sprinkler mains, MEP hangers, and electrical conduits have been installed in the gymnasium.

Week of August 10th
Pouring of lightweight concrete on the 2nd floor continued this week and will be finished by next Monday. An exterior mock up has been built on site for architects and contractors to make sure all seals and materials are exact.

Week of August 3rd
This week burnished block wall installation began in the MAC (Multi-Activity Court). The walls of the MAC are going to be rounded for arena type game play including indoor soccer and floor hockey.

Week of July 27th
This week stairway number 1 was installed on the East side of the building. Metal decking in all 4 areas is scheduled to be finished by next week. The first and second floor of the facility will begin to be more visible as the next few weeks of deck (floor) construction continue.

Week of July 20th
Light weight concrete in areas 1 and 4 were poured this week. Concrete deck in area 2 (Northwest corner) was also poured. Welding continues on the 2nd floor and rooftop.

Week of July 13th
The high and low roofing in areas 1 and 4 were installed and finished this week. Metal decking is ongoing but should be completed by the end of this month.

Week of July 6th
Welding of steel, trusses and metal decking in area 1 is complete this week as reach week 30 of the construction timeline. With a little over a year until completion, crews have been working rapidly to hit all deadlines.

Week of June 29th
This week the last pieces of structural steel are on site and work in areas 2 and 3 continue. Fire proofing in area 1 (Northeast corner) began this week.

Week of June 22nd
This week on the construction site ASI hosted a “Topping Off” ceremony allowing the campus community to sign a beam that was put into place on the 2nd floor. This ceremony marks a significant accomplishment in this phase of construction as we reach week 28.

Week of June 15th
This week structural steel has been completed in areas 1 and 4, except for a few braces. Crew’s have begun steel construction in area’s 2 and 3 around the gymnasium and locker rooms and will continue this process for the next two weeks.

Week of June 8th
With a larger crane on site, structural steels continues in areas 1 and 4 around the Multi-Activity Courts (MAC), rock-climbing wall, racquetball courts and partially into the women’s locker room and gymnasium.

Week of June 1st, 2009

The erection of structural steel continues this week with materials being delivered consistently. As erection in area 1 continues, crews are simultaneously constructing in area 4 (southeast corner). Stairwells will start to become more visible at this construction phase.

Week of May 25th, 2009

This week structural steel building has begun! Construction in area 1 (Northeast corner) began on Tuesday and major steel surrounding what will be the Multi-Activity Courts is in place. The project has now reached week 23.

Week of May 18th, 2009

Structural steel was delivered this week in preparation for next week’s construction.  Crane pieces were also brought onto the site to be constructed next week.

Week of May 11th, 2009

This week slab on grade and concrete pour continues into area 3 (Southwest corner). All tying of rebar is also going to be finished by next week. All site inspections have all been approved up to this point.

Week of May 4th, 2009

The month of May marks as the beginning of structural construction.  Structural steel is still in fabrication as slab on grade pouring for various sections continues into the next week. This is a critical point in the construction process for finalizing all contracts and design elements for the interior of the facility.

Week of April 27th, 2009

This week slab on grade continues to be poured just west of the three-court gymnasium in area 2 (northwest corner).  Engineers and consultants continue to meet to discuss the pool design, digging and construction schedule.

Week of April 20th, 2009
Masonry work began in area 4 (southeast corner) and underground utilities were completed this week. As slab on grade continues to be poured, the three-court gymnasium, two multi-activity courts, restrooms and racquetball courts will become visible from the aerial shots.

Week of April 13th, 2009
This week concrete placement in area 1 (northeast corner) as well as slab on grade is ongoing. Underground plumbing for the locker room restrooms was completed.

Week of April 6th, 2009
This week electrical tie-in and storm and sewer drain work by the tennis courts was finished. According to an estimated 64-week construction schedule, the SRWC is a quarter of the way finished as week 16 in construction comes to a close.

Week of March 30th, 2009

During this week of construction underground plumbing for grid sections 3 and 4 are underway. This includes pipe installation, testing and restoring grade. Preparation for the upcoming pour of slab on grade (foundation) is also ongoing. The slab area will be done in four pours. Major sewer and storm line work at the edge of the tennis courts was also finished over the week of spring break.

Week of March 23rd, 2009

This week digging and preparation for plumbing continues. In the outdoor pool area, soil tests are still ongoing but CSULB has met with the engineers and pool consultants to finalize any major report changes. The primary gas line has also been installed.

Week of March 16th, 2009

During this week of construction the pouring of structural concrete is ongoing. Exterior curbs and rebar templates are to be set and prepared for the installation of masonry dowels next week. The central site where the facility is being constructed is broken down into a grid of lines to keep engineers and crews on track. From these numbered gridlines, engineers and crews can plot out placement of electrical wiring and plumbing. As construction proceeds, the gridlines will become more visible in the live shots.

Week of March 9th, 2009

This week the pad footings were installed and finished.  The layouts for the digging for plumbing have been submitted and approved, and the actual digging will begin next week.  All electrical surveying is complete and electrical lines will start to be installed next week.

Week of March 2nd, 2009

During this week of construction sewer line installation was completed while additional storm drain line installation continues.  Grading of the building pad and survey certification is complete. Foundation pouring continues as anchor bolts and rebar are delivered to the site.

Week of February 23rd, 2009

This week the first foundation pour took place. This marks the beginning of key construction phases. Along with foundation, the laying and installation of underground electrical lines continues. Existing storm drains and catch basins were located and filled with concrete.

Week of February 16th, 2009

During this week of construction, after seismic inspection, additional Geo-Piers and footings were installed by the end of the week. Due to rain delays construction crews have had to pump out pooling water. Foundation excavation is scheduled to begin on February 19 but with more rain expected, this date may change. LEED coordination and performance meetings continue as construction progresses.

Week of February 9th, 2009

This week storm line drains were installed and the installation of Geo-Piers is complete. Foundation excavation also began this week in accordance to seismic peer reviews. With a few rain day delays in sight, the construction schedule should not be significantly affected.

Week of February 2nd, 2009

This week the footing layouts have been put into place as the installation of Geo-Piers continues.  All department timelines have been submitted and ASI project coordinators have sent out Request for Proposals (RFP’s) for interior and exterior furniture, facility membership systems, and security and surveillance. Some rain days caused the postponement of some earthwork but have not affected the overall construction schedule.

Week of January 26th, 2009

This week all excavation materials have been removed and the installation of Geo-Piers continues. Surveying for storm drains and basins has begun and will continue into the next week. All blading and the cutting of verticals was finished prior to Friday’s Ground Breaking Ceremony. It is now the sixth week of construction and the Student Recreation and Wellness Center project is right on schedule.

Week of January 19th, 2009

This week geopier installation begins, and will last for about 18 working days, while major excavation continues. Tuesday’s LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) kickoff meeting successfully covered all LEED standards for each construction aspect of the project. The goal for the Student Recreation and Wellness Center is to become LEED Silver Certified which is one of the highest ratings for “green” buildings that recognizes performance in five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality. The SRWC official groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for Friday, January 30 at 11 a.m. on the construction site located in Parking Lot 11 on Palo Verde Avenue. Construction will be postponed shortly for the event.

Week of January 12th, 2009
During this week of construction, grading and surveying of the soil and foundation continues. Thanks to the sunny Southern California weather, the SRWC project is right on schedule. The landscape has been separated into four major areas, beginning in the northeast corner, which will progressively change over the course of the construction project. The official groundbreaking ceremony in scheduled for January 30, 2009. Stay tuned for more information about this event.

Week of January 5th, 2009
Groundbreaking in progress! The Student Recreation and Wellness Center project has officially reached Week 3 of the construction phase. Fencing is set up around the perimeter of the site and Parking Lot 11 has been completely demolished, aside from parking in front of the University Police station. C.W. Driver’s construction crew is in the process of grading and digging for the foundation, as well as installing structural footings. The construction project sign is in design and will be placed next to site fencing next week for public viewing. Also note, the SRWC is being built according to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified standards so all of the construction materials and procedures are environmentally conscious.
