Intramural Volleyball Rules
Eligibility: Only CSULB Students, Faculty, Staff. No Alumni
Number of Players
- A team shall consist of six players. Three females and three males must be on the court at all times. If there are only two females on the court the team is still eligible to play but they must play a person down meaning they will play with five people. You cannot have a male replace the female for any reason. Four males and two females is not allowed.
- A team may not begin a game with less than four players and in that case it should be two females and two males. Three males and one female is not allowed.
- If, for any reason, a team is reduced to fewer than four players, the game shall be forfeited.
Position of Players
- When the ball is served, each player may be anywhere within his own half of the court. He/she may not be out of rotation prior to the serve.
- All players must stand within the court boundaries, except the server.
- A player may leave the court to play the ball but cannot enter the court when a game is in progress.
Playing the game
- There are unlimited substitutions. Each substitute must rotate into the serving position, becoming the server. The team making the substitution must be the serving team. Substitutes must be of the same sex as the player being substituted for.
- Official NCAA Volleyball Rules shall govern play except for the points and exceptions noted herein.
- The ball must be given immediate impetus at contact.
- The ball must be contacted a total of three times before going over the net.
- If two or more players of the same team contact the ball simultaneously, it is considered two plays, and the players involved may participate in the next play.
- In blocking the ball the team whose side the ball has the right to play the ball three times.
- The ball may not be thrown, held or pushed.
- A player may step on, but not over, the centerline.
- A player may not touch the net with any part of the body while the ball is in play.
- The server may not step on or over the end line.
- Only the captain may ask questions of the referee.
- If a game is in progress on the next court players may not enter the other court to play the ball.
- When the ball hits the ceiling on a serve or on the way over the net, the ball is dead. When the ball hits the ceiling on the first or second hit and stays on side the ball is in play.
Scoring
- Games will be scored to 25 points. Teams must win a game by 2 points.
- Games will be played best out of 3.
- If a third game is needed, that game will only go to 15 points. The first team to reach 15 wins. You do not have to win by two points.
- There is a 20 minute time limit per game. On the 20 minute mark the game will end and the high score wins the game.
