As of April 2004 the ITRP Project at CSULB was considered
100% complete. As of Summer 2005 a second project to complete items
not addressed by the first project was completed. This second
project addressed additional jacks and cables needed for changes or omissions in Phase I.
Two new main telephone/data buildings, known as MDFs, were constructed and one was been expanded. These buildings are
the central locations for voice and data equipment and have generator
backup power to maintain critical systems during times of emergencies.
One will also
be the location for CSULB's connection to the outside world. All other
building telecommunications rooms have been completed and all have
network
electronics installed and are operational.
The steps in the original infrastructure process involved:
cutting the roadway, excavation of
the trenches, installation of the conduits, conduit spacers and braces
as well as
the utility
vaults, commonly referred to as "Man Holes". The utility
vaults are prefabricated concrete boxes that simply serve as a workspace
area
for splicing cable runs. Then all trenches were filled
with concrete to prevent future construction mishaps and the shifting
of the conduit runs, and usually marked with a warning tape and dye.
The last step was the final thin layer of asphalt or concrete. In planter
areas dirt and new landscaping were the last steps.
The conduit process appeared speedy compared to the next
steps which involved pulling telephone and fiber cables. This is the
time consuming portion and is labor intensive, especially when splices
have to be made and tested. In addition to the main exterior runs,
interior
runs had to be made as well. Only
after the conduits,
cabling, testing, and equipment rooms were completed was the data
electronics installed.
The last part of the process, cables from the data electronics
to the terminal blocks and from the wall jack to the user's PCs were
completed in all areas with the assistance of department technical
support,
where available.
