MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Professional degree from an ALA-accredited school.  Ability to communicate effectively with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.

DESIRED/PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Demonstrated competence in reference work, preferably in an academic library.  Familiarity with a variety of print and electronic reference tools, including a wide range of web-based   resources.  Good communication skills and the ability to maintain effective interpersonal relations with staff and public.  Commitment to service excellence.  

DUTIES: Assistant Librarians report to the Dean of Library Services.  They are responsible for providing general reference service at the University Library Reference Desk, assisting with basic questions for all subject disciplines.  Responsibilities and duties include utilizing and providing instruction for a variety of electronic and print information resources; providing referral service to resources elsewhere in the library and for sources not held by CSULB; conducting helpful and efficient reference interviews; being familiar with and following established Reference and Library policies and procedures; exhibiting knowledge of core reference sources while continuing to develop knowledge of collections and resources regardless of format; and other duties as assigned, e.g. providing instruction in a classroom setting.  Assignments are on-call, usually for a block of hours, days and hours will vary depending on the needs of the University Library, but evening and weekend hours will be included.

SALARY RANGE: Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Appointments will be made at the Assistant Librarian level (equivalent to $20.86 - $28.19 per hour; these rates may be subject to change as a result of collective bargaining). 

REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION: Candidates must submit a letter of application, resume, an official transcript from the university awarding the library Masters Degree, and two letters of reference.  Photocopies of transcripts may be supplied until official transcripts can be submitted.  Candidates will be asked to complete an official university application form (SC-1) and confidential data sheet.  Employment is contingent upon proof of the legal right to work in the United States.  This proof must be provided prior to employment at the University.  An appointment is not final until proof has been provided.  Documentation may be provided through e-mail, but copies must follow through U.S. mail.
