Parent and Family Orientation

As a parent/family of a freshman, you and your student are now a part of the CSULB family.  You play critical roles in your freshman's ability to succeed in higher education, especially in their freshman year at CSULB.

 

Each summer the Divisions of Academic Affairs and Student Services offer Parent and Family Orientation (PFO), a day-long opportunity for the parents and families of incoming freshmen to learn about the academic requirements needed to obtain a baccalaureate degree and an introduction to campus services for students. During this day-long orientation, you'll receive a classroom experience to better understand faculty expectations of your freshman, the factors which lead to student success, and an overview to campus services provided for CSULB students. The day concludes at about 4:00 PM with an optional self-guided campus tour. (If you are interested in the self-guided tour, please let us know during the afternoon as we have brochures for your use.)

 

Although attendance is not mandatory, PFO empowers you to serve as a valuable resource for your student.  Together we can provide a solid foundation for your entering freshman. 

   

Fee
The non-refundable orientation fee is $40.00 for each PFO attendee. The fee covers the program, parking, and lunch.

Invitation to register
If your student has been admitted to CSULB for the upcoming fall semester, they should receive an email invitation in late May requesting they forward the email to you. A postcard invitation to PFO will be sent to parents at the students' home in early June.

To register for a PFO session

Our online PFO registration website (using credit card and e-check processing) is available by clicking https://commerce.cashnet.com/pfo

We are not able to accept cash for PFO.  

After you have registered

Your confirmation email is generated soon after you register.  If you don't receive the confirmation email by the fourth day after registration, please call us at (562) 985-5458.

Parking for PFO
Please print your PFO parking map before leaving home. Parking for PFO participants is reserved in General Parking Lots 14A, 14B, and 14C (see the PFO parking map). As you can tell from the map, these Parking Lots can be accessed from Atherton Street by taking Merriam Way.

Again, park only in Lots 14A, 14B, or 14C when you arrive on campus. When you park in Lots 14A, 14B, and 14C on your PFO day, a parking permit is not required to park. For families requiring parking accommodations for the disabled, stop by the Visitor Information Center on Beach Drive, inform the attendant that you are attending the Parent and Family Orientation that day, and present your handicapped placard. You will be provided a permit after signing the required form.

Special Information

Check-in for PFO will be on the second floor (Maxson Plaza) of Brotman Hall. Signs will direct you to the check-in location.

  • Although seating is limited, we are sometimes able to accept walk-ins. 
  • We can not accommodate young children at PFO. 
  • We can not accept cash.
  • Bring a sweater or light jacket and wear comfortable walking shoes.

PFO is presented in English. A supplemental program in Spanish is also offered.
