Learning Assistance

CSULB offers a variety of Learning Assistance Services to facilitate students’ academic success. In addition to the resources described below, students should consult with their faculty members and departments to learn about other opportunities for assistance.

Learning Assistance Center (LAC)

The LAC is the university’s most comprehensive learning support resource, offering students assistance in nearly any learning-related area.

  • Tutoring is available for most subjects taught on campus.
  • Traditionally difficult courses are supported by Supplemental Instruction.
  • Learning Skills Specialists help students become academically successful through personal training or coaching and via special workshops.
  • Students who speak English as a second language will find help in everything from conversation skills to academic writing.

The Writer's Resource Lab (WRL)

The Writer's Resource Lab (WRL) is CSULB's writing center, offering personalized tutorials to CSULB students at all levels. WRL tutors teach students to become more effective and independent writers so they can effectively evaluate, edit, and proofread their own essays and papers successfully.

The WRL website includes a number of handouts to help writers complete various types of assignments, such as abstracts, book reviews and different types of essays.

Math Tutoring Centers

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers free tutoring and study tables for students in:

  • All MAPB classes
  • All 100-level Math classes
  • Math 223
  • Math 224
  • Math 247

On a more limited basis, the department also provides a Math Education Tutoring Center for students enrolled in MTED courses.

Jensen SAS Center

Jensen SAS Center's peer tutors offer free assistance in most 100-level science and math courses, as well as several more advanced levels of biology and chemistry. Check the website to identify the specific hours help is available for particular courses.

Hauth Center for Communication Skills

The Hauth Center is a full-service Center offering professional support and communication skills resources to students, faculty, and community residents and business leaders.

They can help individuals become more effective public speakers, conversationalists, or group leaders. Their services address a wide range of communicative needs, ranging from overcoming the fear of speaking in front of others to using the latest technology in presentations or rehearsing for interviews.
