Conditions

We (the Chair, Dean, and Director of Research) are looking for good opportunities and must evaluate the potential for your success based on realistic measures. Ultimately, your chances depend on such things as:

  • Having a good idea A "good idea" is a fresh idea and one which is flexible (within reason) enough to meet the program guidelines under which funding agency program officers must live. Often a faculty member has to modify a "good idea" to meet the objectives of the program that seems most likely to fund.
  • Your credentials and visibility, including:
    • Articles in major journals
    • Prior grants or participation in them
    • Anything else interest to a program officer
    • Written endorsement of the trip by your department chair and dean
  • The amount of funds we have.

After consideration of the points above, we will evaluate the request also in terms how other funds you have identified can be leveraged to put together a really good trip.

With the help of the Office of Federal Programs, we can get you several days full of appointments, get concept papers to these people in advance, or whatever other plan seems most appropriate in the individual circumstances.

The finak condition is that you will share your experiences with others in your area and that you produce a competitive proposal for external funding of at least $50K plus facilities and administration costs (F&A ... formerly known as "indirect costs.") The Research Office will assist in the proposal development and clearance as well.
