Assigned Time Application Instructions

Faculty are invited and encouraged to apply for support for their research, scholarship and creative activities.

  • Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity (RSCA) awards for assigned time

Applications for Assigned Time Awards are due to departments by 4:30 p.m. on October 24, 2011.

Details regarding the types of awards currently supported are provided below.

Eligibility

  Only tenured, probationary, and full-time lecturers are eligible to compete for reassigned time funding.   Tenure Track Faculty in their first three years who are receiving assigned time are not eligible for this program.


A Report of Work Accomplished must be on file for all previous RSCA awards in order for an applicant to receive an award.

Activities Supported

The following activities are eligible for all RSCA Awards:

  • Basic Research
  • Applied Research
  • Creative Activities in the Arts


The following activities are ineligible for any RSCA Awards:

  • Curricular development or improvement including pedagogical research
  • Department or college programs or facilities
  • Completion of requirements for an advanced degree
  • Community service

Types of Awards

Assigned Time Awards

Assigned Time will be awarded through a competitive process at the college level. Each college will be allocated support from Academic Affairs and each college will determine the criteria, policies and procedures for allocating the awards. Each Assigned Time Award will be equal to three units of assigned time for one year.


Application Instructions

NOTE: A failure to follow the application instructions may adversely influence the evaluation of your proposal.


Faculty may use the form obtained at the web link at the end of this document to submit applications or may prepare a facsimile provided that the content, format, and length of the attached form are observed.

Application

  • The first page of the application includes personal information.
  • The next two pages include the text of the proposal.
  • The fourth and fifth pages include a faculty history covering the last three years.
  • The remaining pages are reserved for reporting the evaluations of the College RSCA committee and the College Dean.


The application should be prepared using 12-point type and one-inch margins.

Applicants should bear in mind that proposals are read and evaluated by the College RSCA committee, the College Dean. As such, proposals should be written so that they are intelligible to faculty from diverse disciplines across the University.

 

Application Categories

Applications are reviewed in "clusters." Indicate the cluster that best fits your proposal.

  • Cluster A: Basic or Applied Research in natural sciences, engineering or mathematics.
  • Cluster B1: Applied Research in business administration, health, human services, education, public administration, or library scholarship.
  • Cluster B2: Basic Research in humanities, social sciences, fine arts scholarship.
  • Cluster C: Creative Activity in fine arts and creative writing.

The Evaluation Process

RSCA Assigned Time applications will be evaluated by College committees established by College Faculty Councils. The College Faculty Councils will determine the policies and procedures for evaluating and awarding RSCA Assigned Time applications.
