Orientation to Misconduct in Research

Resources

The resource (menu) "On Being a Scientist," produced by the National Academy of Sciences, contains a section on Misconduct, which includes two "case studies." You are invited to read this short section and consider the ethical situations that are presented there.

The Office of Research Integrity, PHS, has a webpage (Resources menu) which contains valuable information about the kinds of misconduct and the results of proven misconduct. Your attention is drawn to the list of names of persons against whom "administrative action" has been taken as the result of misconduct.

"The Whistleblowers Bill of Rights," also found in the ORI website, is a succinct statement of the serious situation that surrounds the act of informing against another researcher. Whistleblowing, as defined, is an act of courage and resolve.
