You are invited to read the campus policy on Misconduct in Research and Creative Activity before continuing with this section of the module. (see Resources menu)
"Misconduct in research is defined as fabrication, falsification, plagiarism, or other practices that seriously deviate from those that are commonly accepted within the academic community for proposing, conducting, or reporting research and creative activity. Misconduct does not include honest error or honest differences in interpretations of data." (Policy Statement 91-02) (emphasis added)
It is a requirement that an allegation of misconduct be written and be signed by the person making the allegation. Anonymous and oral allegations cannot be accepted; they will be ignored. The privacy of persons making allegations will be preserved as much as possible within the constraints of the requirements of due process (which will be explained in a moment).
CSU Long Beach has a separate policy statement on Cheating and Plagiarism, which is specifically written to the problem of student cheating and plagiarism. This policy is effective for all student academic work, including work done in campus research laboratories and on campus research projects. It is possible that both policies could be invoked for cases when student cheating within the laboratory setting establishes a form of misconduct in research. In order to determine whether any wrongdoing has taken place, the policy on misconduct will be invoked to assure a steady and fair administration of due process.
