Orientation to Research with Human Subjects

How to Proceed

The edifice of human subjects protection depends on three fundamental ethical principles. These principles are described in "The Belmont Report." If you have not already done so, please take 15 to 20 minutes and read these eight pages. Then return to this page and begin the Orientation to Ethics Tutorial. The tutorial should take from five to ten minutes.

The second piece of this Orientation concerns "Informed Consent." If you have not already done so, you should visit the University of Minnesota Informed Consent website for which there is a link on the left of this page. When you are finished, about thirty minutes, you should go to the Orientation to Informed Consent Tutorial. This tutorial will take about fifteen minutes of your time.

Step three is a look at "risk to benefit analysis." You should read widely from the Resources library and be sure to look at the Nuremberg document. Then, with your next five minutes take the Orientation to Risk-Benefit Tutorial.

The last study module is about the Institutional Review Board for the Protection of Human Subjects--The IRB. When NIH changes the Assurance process later this year, this module will begin with the Assurance. In the meantime the important thing is to understand the scope of authority of the IRB. You should read the University Policy Statement and the "Dear Colleague Letters" within the IRB Manual which is the top item on the left side of this screen. Finish this module with the Orientation to the IRB Tutorial.

For personnel who need to be certified as having completed the University orientation to human subjects policy, the last step is an interactive, electronic, summary self-evaluation. At the end you will receive instructions on how to become "certified." If you are ready for the evaluation, click here now.
