Orientation to Conflict of Interest and Commitment

Informal Process

The formal process for federal conflict resolution is discrete and straightforward. Because we do not do medical research and our faculty are unlikely to have threshold-level financial interests in research-related industries, it is also very unlikely to be implemented in the CSU Long Beach environment. The State conflict threshholds are much lower, but only pertain to grants from private enterprise and certain other kinds of organizations where the researcher could be in a position to control awards.

The Director, Office of University Research is available to anyone who believes that a conflict of interests may potentially affect his or her research. The Director will engage the inquiror in a form of personal and private values clarification. The researcher will reach his or her own conclusions from this and take whatever necessary measures that seem appropriate, including declaration of conflicted financial interests and measures to relieve such a situation.
