The National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation both require that researchers declare any financial conflict of interest before accepting federal funds. In certain circumstances where a "self-aggrandizement" issue is present the researchers will be required by their institution to divest or shelter themselves of the interests sufficiently to assure that the "public trust" over federal funding is maintained and that the personal aggrandizement is clearly not an intentional outcome of the research. It is the responsibility of the institution to accomplish the remedy and resolution. This provides a measure of personal privacy that is important.
The threshholds for reporting an interest are given in the CSU Long Beach Executive Order (see Resources menu). All persons submitting proposals at CSU Long Beach are obliged to declare (by check box on the Internal Clearance Form) that they understand they must make a statement of financial conflict of interest if applying to NSF or a USPHS agency or to a non-exempt agency on the State of California list. If they must, they file conflict of financial interest statements with the Director, Office of University Research.
