Examples of Conflict of Interest and Commitment

Example Seven (Summary)

We have seen many different kinds of conflict of interest. All the resolutions of the conflicts are measures of the credibility and trustworthiness of the researcher. We have seen conflicts of interest based in:

  • Real politik
  • Fear and conscience
  • Premise and evidence
  • Financial interest -- self-aggrandizement
  • Financial interest -- public trust
  • Secrecy and proprietary interests vs. publication interests
  • Personal career vs. collaborators' careers
  • Constituencies

These are the major forms of conflict of interest which have consequences to the integrity of research. When NIH and NSF funding are directly involved there are discrete processes for avoiding the conflict. In other cases, less formal means are available. The end product, however resolved, is the personal reputation of the individual and, in some sense, the individual's home institution.
