The fundamental principle undergirding conflicts of interest, including financial conflicts of interest is the integrity of the research results, their trustworthiness. This is the final test in all cases of conflicting values and principles. When it is perceived that the best efforts of the researcher are the same as the best practices of the discipline, the conflict is resolved. When it is perceived that the researcher is motivated by anything other than modest hope for a successful career there is at least the appearance of a conflict of interest.
Becoming wedded to a theory or qualities of theory like "elegance," "symmetry," etc., to a methodology, or to an array of practical applications is the foundation of a fundamental conflict of interest, if elucidation of the truth is to remain the basic goal. Yet, astonishing breakthroughs in science and the arts have occurred under just exactly these circumstances. The progress of human knowledge is not aimless or random, but it occasionally takes a turn toward the unexpected. Within the realm of the unexpected one must be ready to put on the brakes and take general stock of implications.
The Conflict of Interests module is concluded. You will now be directed to the final evaluation for certification.
