The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals

Timely Intervention

Timely intervention into an experimental setting, typically when adverse conditions and responses arise which were not predicted in the approved protocol, depends upon systematic monitoring of the laboratory animals by the scientific staff, the animal care staff, and the veterinarian.

Scientific staff are to understand that failure to report adverse responses, particularly an unexpected number of deaths or premature deaths, can seriously compromise the relationship between the PI and the IACUC. As with pain and stress, the implications of adverse responses go directly to the scientific results themselves.
