The main point of The Guide on training and expertise is that only qualified personnel will be allowed to work with animals. Accordingly, in the early 1980's CSULB decided to staff the CSULB animal facilities with only AALAS certified technicians.
Faculty must provide proof to the IACUC that they have adequate training with animals and are capable of working with them. In addition, all faculty using animals, must undergo safety training implemented by the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics Safety Office. When species training or animal related methodology training is needed, such training can be given by the Research Facilities Coordinator. Faculty are held responsible for assuring that students are properly trained. However, both the Safety Office and Research Facilities Coordinator are available for student training if the faculty member requests student specialized training. Assurances of qualifications are included in the animal use protocol provided to the IACUC.
