The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals

Alternatives (briefly)

There is the potential for tension to exist between researchers who view laboratory animals as essential to their work and individuals who oppose it as cruelty to animals. The modern "alternatives movement" has evolved amid this tension. The IACUC has instituted the requirement that upon submission of a protocol PI's provide proof that every attempt to search for alternative was considered. The alternative may include the use of lower ordered animals, reducing the numbers of animals, or using less invasive techniques, such as computer models or any other effective technique that the PI believes can achieved the goals of protocol.

This orientation module will cover alternatives separately in the second section.
