Celebrate Summer at Staff Days

Staff Days of Summer Staff can participate in a scavenger hunt, talent show, luncheon and family game night during Staff Days of Summer August 4 – 7.

The events are scheduled as follows:

  • August 4: Talent Show 12 to 1 pm


  • August 5: Scavenger Hunt from 12 to 1 pm


  • August 6: Staff Day Luncheon. Includes vendor booths, gift drawings and a rummage sale. The pre-paid box lunch can be picked up from 11:30 am to 1 pm at the Nugget Grill and Pub.


  • August 7: Night of Games at the Student Union

2015-16 Fulbright Program Deadline Approaching

The deadline to apply for most 2015-16 Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program awards is Friday, August 1.


The program offers nearly 600 awards in teaching, research, or a combination of teaching and research in over 125 countries. Opportunities are available for college and university faculty and administrators as well as for professionals, artists, journalists, scientists, lawyers, independent scholars, and many others.

Interested faculty and professionals are encouraged to learn more about core Fulbright U.S. Scholar opportunities by visiting the online catalog of awards.

U.S. citizenship is required. For other eligibility requirements and detailed award descriptions, please visit the program website.

Backpack Drive to Help Local Children

Staff Council is holding the third annual Back-to-School Backpack Drive to help local children at the Long Beach Rescue Mission. You can help by purchasing a new, solid color backpack and filling it with the following supplies or just making a donation.

  • One 2-inch hardcover 3-ring binder
  • One 6-pack of red ballpoint pens
  • Two one-subject spiral notebook
  • One 12-inch ruler
  • Two packages of college-ruled notebook paper (loose leaf)
  • One large pink eraser
  • One 12-pack of blue or black ballpoint pens
  • One plastic pen and pencil holder (3 hole)
  • One 12-pack of #2 pencils with erasers
  • One 8-pack of washable markers
  • One package of 3x5 lined index cards
  • One package of subject dividers
  • One small pencil sharpener


Backpacks can be dropped off in Staff HR (BH-335) now through August 20 or at Staff Day on August 6. Call extension 5-8716 to arrange for a backpack to be picked up or for additional information.

Summer Institutes Focus on Statistical Analysis

Faculty are invited to attend the following seminars:

  • July 24-25: “Generalized Linear Mixed Model for the Complete Idiot” presented by Walter Stroup from the Department of Statistics at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln.
  • August 4-5: “Latent Class Analysis” presented by Bethany Bray from the Methodology Center at Pennsylvania State University.


Organized by Research Infrastructure in Minority Institutions (RIMI), both seminars will be held from 9 am to 4 pm at the Center for Behavioral Research and Services, 1090 Atlantic Avenue.

Lunch will be provided. Bring a laptop, if possible. A book will be offered to attendees at each seminar. RSVP to Jeff Wood, extension 5-2176.

Weekly Walking Group Starts Tomorrow

Starting tomorrow, July 17, at 12 pm, a weekly walking group will meet outside the north entrance of the LifeFit Center for a 30- to 45-minute walk through campus. 

Led by LifeFit Center Director Ayla Donlin, the walking group is free to join and participants do not need to be LifeFit members.

In addition, 7th District Councilman Roberto Uranga also attended CSULB. His wife, former City Councilmember Tonia Reyes Uranga, is also an alum.


Garcia, Doud, Gonzalez, Price and Uranga were sworn into office yesterday.

Other Long Beach City Council members include 2nd District Councilwoman Suja Lowenthal; 5th District Councilwoman Stacy Mungo; 8th District Councilman Al Austin and 9th District Councilman Rex Richardson.
