Chancellor White's Visit to CSULB

As you know, Chancellor White was on campus Monday to learn more about what makes CSULB special.

During the day he toured the campus and met with hundreds of faculty, students and staff, including college deans, student leadership and the Academic Senate executive committee. He juggled with students, met the basketball team in the Pyramid and administered CPR on a training manikin in the Nursing Building.

Before leaving for the day, Chancellor White described the campus as a jewel. I would like to thank the many people who worked to make his visit a success.

The Little Hoover Commission Declares Long Beach a Model for California

The Little Hoover Commission is a well-recognized Sacramento institution that provides policy recommendations to the California State Legislature.

On Monday, the Commission released a report on California higher education. Included in the report is a long section titled "Building Better Links: The Long Beach Experience," which touts the Long Beach College Promise as a model for the state. CSULB's College of Education is a strong partner in the College Promise. The report says:

"Regional partnerships such as the Long Beach College Promise not only get high school students to think of themselves as college-bound, but to prepare themselves so they are in a better position to succeed once they are there. ... The early results have been impressive. Long Beach Unified School District freshman admissions to CSU Long Beach increased by 43 percent between 2008 and 2012, despite the university having to decrease overall admissions by 2,000 students in the 2009-10 and 2010-11 school years due to budget cuts. "

Alumni Grants Program Accepting Applications

Applications are now being accepted for the 23rd Annual Alumni Grants Program. Sponsored by the CSULB Alumni Association, the Grants Program provides funding to university departments and programs. Allocations range from $1,500 to $7,500, with a total of up to $50,000 to be awarded. More than $725,000 has been awarded to campus departments and programs in the last 22 years. The deadline to submit applications is Friday, December 6.

CSU Seeks Resident Directors for China, France, Italy, Spain

The CSU Office of International Programs is calling for applications for four 12-month, full-time, one-year, resident director positions in China, France, Italy, and Spain.

A CSU resident director position provides qualified CSU faculty members with an opportunity to be a vital part of students' experiences in intercultural learning, develop their administrative skills and utilize their international communicative skills in a rewarding, professional environment.

Faculty from all disciplines and those who have never had the opportunity previously to serve in one of these positions are especially encouraged to apply. The deadline date for receipt of applications, including references, in the Office of International Programs is December 1. Interview dates are February 20-21, 2014 at the CSU Chancellor's Office.

Child Development Study: Effects of Media on Gender Roles

The Psychology Department's CSULB Culture and Gender Development Lab (CGDL) is recruiting 3- and 4-year-old children for a study on the effects of media on children's gendered behaviors and beliefs.

In 10-15 minute sessions, children will be asked to watch Disney video clips and answer some questions. Sessions will take place in the Psychology building on campus and children will always be in the view of the parent.

Parents are also encouraged to participate in an optional survey. Participating children will receive a gift with a small book, toys, and school supplies ($5 value) and parents who complete the survey will be entered in a drawing to win a $100 gift card.

Did You Know?

"How America Pays for College," a study by Sallie Mae, offers some insight on students' and families' views on the value of a college education and how they pay for it.

  • 85 percent of families strongly agree that college is an investment in their child's future, the highest number in five years.
  • 92 percent of families pursuing a bachelor's degree believe it will take five years or less to earn a degree.
  • Parents have reduced the share they contribute toward college expenses from 37 percent in 2010 to 27 percent.
  • 65 percent of families use grants and scholarships to fund college costs, more than any other source of funding.
  • Grants and scholarships cover 30 percent of the cost of college today, compared to 23 percent in 2010.
  • Families have adjusted to a new post-recession reality by adopting a new cost consciousness when paying for college – including eliminating schools on the basis of cost and living at home. They are taking steps to ease college costs in part, by making ends meet:
    • 48 percent of parents and 60 percent of students reduced overall spending.
    • 20 percent of parents and 47 percent of students worked more.
