CSULB Moot Court Students with CSULB alum Justice Paul TurnerCSULB Finishes Strong at Moot Court Tournament

California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) teams finished third, fifth sixth, seventh and eighth out of 34 teams at the Western Regional Moot Court Tournament at CSULB on December 4. A CSULB record of nine students earned the opportunity to compete in the national tournament in Miami in 2010:

  • Reema Abboud and Timothy Appelbaum
  • Jillian Ewan and Ryan King
  • Richard Bosanko and Kyle Bourne
  • Ashlie Brillault and Jose Reynoso
  • Katie McHale whose teammate is Kyle Lee of Chapman University

Reynoso, Ewan, Brillault and Matthew Gunter were among the top 10 speakers at the tournament. In addition, Appelbaum and Abboud became the second and third students in CSULB history to earn bids to more than one national tournament. They are also the only two in CSULB history to earn two automatic bids to the national competition (2008 and 2009) and they are just the fourth team in CSULB history since 2003 to reach the regional semi-finals.

CSULB’s Gilman Scholarship Recipients

Three California State University, Long Beach students received Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships. Sienne Mascarenas Diaz, an illustration major, will be studying in the United Kingdom. Nhi Kathy Tran, an international business major with a Spanish minor, will be in Hong Kong. Adrianna Wilson, an early childhood education major, will be studying in New Zealand this spring. Sponsored by the State Department, the Gilman program is for students on Pell Grants who are especially needful of financial support to study abroad and is meant to help diversify the nation's study abroad population.

Criminal Justice Chair Hank FradellaCriminal Justice Chair Co-Authors Book

Criminal Justice Chair Hank Fradella became David Neubauer's co-author on the 10th edition of America's Courts and the Criminal Justice System. The book, available in January 2010 from Wadsworth/Cengage, offers a comprehensive explanation of criminal courts presented in a streamlined, straightforward manner. The text's innovative "courtroom workgroup" model, which focuses on the interrelationships among the judge, prosecutor, and defense attorney, brings the courtroom to life. This modern edition offers coverage that reflects recent policy-shaping and headline-making developments.
