Allergan Distinguished Visiting Lecturer Series

Allergan CEO David Pyott and Chemistry and Biochemistry Chair Jeff CohlbergDepartment of Chemistry and Biochemistry Chair Jeff Cohlberg received a $5,000 check from Allergan CEO David Pyott this summer to support the Department's weekly Seminar Series as well as the annual Allergan Distinguished Visiting Lecturer Series, which will be this Wednesday, November 18. This year’s visiting lecturer, Julius Rebek from the Scripps Institute, will present a general lecture titled "Molecular Assembly and Encapsulation" at 2 pm in the Beach Auditorium (USU). The lecture will be followed by a technical lecture at 5:30 pm in LA2-109 entitled "The Inner Space of Molecules." Additional information is available on the Department Web site.

Book Co-Edited by Education's Symcox Receives Award

A book co-edited by Linda Symcox (Teacher Education) has received the "Peace Studies Book of the Year" Award by the Central New York Peace Studies Consortium. Social Justice, Peace and Environmental Education: Transformative Standards (Routledge, 2009) is a groundbreaking collection of articles on the interconnectivity of social justice, peace, and environmental preservation. The Peace Studies Book of the Year Award is an international award for an outstanding book in the field of peace studies.

Team of Four Faculty Receive NSF Grant

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded a $292,226 grant to fund collaborative research at CSULB’s Institute for Integrated Research in Materials, Environments and Society (IIRMES). CSULB anthropology professor Hector Neff is the principal investigator for the NSF/IIRMES project. Also involved with the project are co-principal investigators Lora Stevens-Landon, assistant professor of geological sciences; Gregory Holk, associate professor of geological sciences; and Carl Lipo, associate professor of anthropology.

Awarded through NSF’s Division of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences, the grant is funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The project, which runs through July 2012, will include research on ancient technology and diets, economic interaction and past environments.

Two CSULB Students Receive Awards

Two students received the Provost’s Award for Best Essay on Women and Public Leadership. Graduate student Mary Ngo received the $125 scholarship for her 11-page essay on "Women and Public Leadership." Undergraduate student Amy Graham received the $125 award for her essay, "The Skirt versus the Pants."
