Three faculty members, 11 students and a local non-profit organization were honored with the Center for Community Engagement’s The Spirit of Service Award last month for their contributions to community engagement.
Awards were given to Carol Itatani (Biological Sciences) and Nancy Briggs (Communication Studies) for their leadership. Both faculty members lead workshops to help faculty develop service learning curriculum. Student Althea Washington was recognized as a former service learning student who became a long-time volunteer at the Oasis Center at the Villages at Cabrillo. In addition, Long Beach BLAST, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving after-school learning for at-risk children and CSULB faculty member Kirran Moss (Communication Studies) were honored for their four-year partnership.
Awards were given at the kick off for the Center for Community Engagement’s 7 Days of Service, a weeklong celebration that highlights CSULB’s commitment to service.
