CSULB’s California Launch Vehicle Education Initiative (CALVEIN) project, a joint effort between Eric Besnard (Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering), students and Garvey Spacecraft, has received the 2009 Buzz Aldrin Space Workforce Award from The California Space Authority (CSA). The award recognizes the exemplary accomplishments of individuals, organizations, and programs that have contributed to the success of California space enterprise in the past year. CALVEIN integrates hands-on engineering education with technology development of tomorrow's low cost launch vehicles and small spacecraft. Carol Shaw-Sutton (Art) has been named a 2010 American Craft Council Fellow. The American Craft Council is a leading voice for the crafts in America and celebrates the remarkable achievements of the many gifted artists working in the media of clay, fiber, glass, metal, wood and other materials. The award is given to an artist of outstanding ability who has worked 25 years or more in his/her discipline.

Ken Curtis, Assistant Vice President of International Education and Global Engagement, has been named an Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA) Presidential Fellow, a prestigious award that serves senior level leaders in international education.

Keith Freesemann (Kinesiology) will be inducted into the Elinor A. Crawford and William R. Thrall Hall of Excellence at University of Northern Iowa on November 7, 2009. The Hall of Excellence recognizes former graduates who have distinguished themselves professionally.

Sharlene SayeghSharlene Sayegh (History) has been appointed Director of Program Review and Assessment. Sayegh has been a full-time lecturer at CSULB for the past 11 years and has taught at the college level for more than 15 years. She has experience in coordinating student learning outcomes assessment in a large liberal arts department, having served for the past four years as the History Department’s Coordinator for its core curriculum courses. Sayegh is knowledgeable in best practices for the assessment of capstones and portfolios, which constitutes an important direction nationally for institutional accreditation. Her familiarity with direct assessment of evidence of student learning will enable her to help faculty and departments to effectively embed assessment within course assignments.

Psychology faculty members Tom Strybel and Kim Vu received their second five-year $5 million grant from NASA to establish a Center for Human Factors in Advanced Aviation Technologies (CHAAT). The center will provide training to students at all levels – undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral.
