In May, an estimated 8,750 students graduated from California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), making the class of 2009 the largest in the university's history. CSULB has continually seen the number of graduates increase, thanks in part to the Academic Advising Center's Graduation Greenlight program, which provides advising to ensure students meet graduation requirements.
In 2008-09 advisors enhanced Graduation Greenlight, increasing its focus on educating students and faculty about graduation requirements and more closely analyzing retention and graduation data. Staff also conducted more than 2,030 graduation check-ups to ensure seniors who had filed for graduation were meeting all requirements and met with over 1,120 students to develop academic plans that will lead to graduation within six years of enrolling at CSULB.
As a result of the staff's efforts, the Graduation Greenlight program was recognized nationally as a model for ensuring students successfully graduate at the Education Advisory Board's Provost Roundtable meeting in Washington D.C. in June.
